I enjoy working on the Internet in an effort to make money from trading stocks, forex, and commodities online as well as to work at building streams of income from operating Internet businesses. Some of the businesses involve working with affiliate programs. My keen interest in the Internet came about as a result of a rather frightening experience which made me fully realize how cool it is to have a business that is entirely portable.

Briefly the story of how I began my Internet business is as follows:

I retired at the early age of 55 (not planned as you will soon see) to do a bit of traveling and to decompress after working as a financial advisor in what is now a very a dangerous part of the world. Even then things could get dicey as warlords and local functionaries could pop in and “suggest” that you operate in certain ways that could be difficult to accept.

However, in general I had an extraordinary time in Pakistan working for a wealthy Pakistani family who treated me well enough and who served as my protectors. Living on the local economy, not in a foreigners enclave, I had interesting neighbors in Lahore, including high ranking retired Army officers and prominent local businessman. For me, for awhile, life in Pakistan was surprisingly good.

Even though Pakistan is a poor country I was living in a well to do area and enjoyed a level of living not many Americans experience. When you live within your own walled in compound, have a live in maid, baby sitter, cook, driver, bodyguard, and gardener you are living in a way uncommon in America for all but the very rich or a well heeled American expatriate living within the local economy.

After being in Pakistan for 18 months I made a huge mistake and started my own business. This was a bad decision, as by striking out on my own I lost my high level protection. I realize now that I was fortunate to escape from Pakistan all in one piece. Sort of.

About a year after starting the business I had a visit from a local warlord which triggered a chain of events that lead to a decision to leave my business behind and just leave as quickly and quietly as possible. Being taken away at gunpoint one fine evening made that decision easy to make. I got the message.

I arrived in Hong Kong, where I had been working before going to Pakistan, as a more or less refugee. Everything was left behind except two suitcases. Fortunately, I had been sending some money to Hong Kong, “just in case”. But the business in Pakistan in which I had made a considerable investment was lost.

As dangerous and volatile as Pakistan was in the nineties it has become much more dangerous now. Knowing what I know now I have no desire to return and hope that President Obama is not foolish enough to further escalate the Af-Pak War. A horrible outcome is all but certain.

Not long after “retiring” I became hooked on the Internet as a way of doing business. I was used to working with computers using financial data and news from Reuters and Telerate so the Internet was perfect for me. Over the years I’ve had my fair share of successes and failures but have always enjoyed the effort of creating online business as well as having such a vast amount of information readily available.

As a huge extra bonus I’ve meet some really cool people along the way. I’ve even met a few in person, especially when I was living in Hawaii and people from all over the world were delighted to visit. And now we have Tweeter to help us make friends from all over.

I relate this brief version of my Internet story as I want you to understand that for me to make money trading online as well as from affiliate programs is my idea of a perfect business. Believe me. Having a business that you can easily transport to just about anywhere in the world is a huge benefit.
